The Role
The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the Engineering function to ensure maximum equipment uptime, efficient energy usage and safe, compliant factory operations.
 
This role oversees the reliability of production assets, leads engineering projects, manages the utilities infrastructure (steam, compressed air, refrigeration, HVAC, ETP, water treatment) and drives continuous improvement across the plant.
 
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Maintenance Management
    • Drive the development and implementation of Site Asset Care Strategy.
    • Ensure continued development of preventive, predictive and autonomous maintenance programmes to minimise downtime, utilising CMMS Avantis and managing the transition to Ultimo.
    • Ensure all machinery and equipment are maintained to OEM standards and regulatory requirements.
    • Drive the team in leading troubleshooting and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for major or repetitive breakdowns and persistent losses.
    • Manage outsourced stores contractor (Rubix) using KPIs to ensure efficient running of stores and create a critical spares strategy.
    • Develop, manage and control the annual Engineering & Utilities budget while leading cost reduction initiatives. Utilise effective KPIs to monitor performance.
 
Utilities Operations & Optimisation
    • Manage the continuous and efficient operation of site utilities including boilers, compressors, chillers, fire water systems, water treatment, ETP, HVAC and power distribution.
    • Implement energy-efficiency and water-reduction initiatives aligned with sustainability targets.
    • Manage maintenance schedules and monitor utilities performance using KPIs, ensuring efficient and cost-effective operation.
 
Project Engineering & Capital Management
    • Provide clear engineering capital spend priorities through detailed analysis and sound business reasoning.
    • Deliver Engineering and Utilities projects on schedule and to specification.
    • Coordinate with internal teams and external contractors to ensure project requirements are met in full and on time.
    • Document all project changes, commissioning results and asset updates.
    • Provide timely handovers, ensuring all factory departments receive clear communication, training and support for successful implementation.
 
Safety, Compliance & Quality Assurance
    • Enforce engineering and utilities compliance with ISO, GMP, HACCP, FSSC Food Safety standards, independent audits and local regulations.
 
  • Team Leadership & Development
    • Lead and develop a team of Engineers and Technicians.
    • Establish performance KPIs and drive training, skills and competency development programmes.
    • Foster a culture of Operational Excellence, continuous improvement, ownership and accountability.
    • Collaborate closely with Operations, Quality and EHS departments.
 
Continuous Improvement & Operational Excellence
    • Drive OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) improvement initiatives.
    • Instil and drive Operational Excellence standards and culture within the Engineering Department.
 
Candidate Requirements
 
Qualifications
    • Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Automation, Manufacturing or related discipline).
 
Experience & Skills
    • Significant experience in a senior engineering leadership role within a manufacturing environment; food processing experience is highly desirable.
    • Proven experience managing engineering and maintenance functions, including preventative, predictive and reliability-based maintenance programmes in highly automated environments.
    • Demonstrated experience delivering capital engineering and utilities projects safely, on time and within budget.
    • Experience using CMMS systems to manage assets, maintenance plans and performance; experience with Avantis and/or Ultimo is highly desirable.
    • Strong budget ownership experience, including cost control, CapEx planning and delivery of cost-reduction initiatives.
    • Hands-on experience leading Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and resolving recurring plant performance or reliability issues.
    • Proven people leadership experience, including developing Engineers and Technicians, performance management and skills development.
    • Track record of driving Operational Excellence and OEE improvements in a manufacturing setting.
